For many years I'd been backing horses for fun, never really making any money at it but not losing any either. It was more of an hobby to me than anything else.
In the bookies that a few mates and I used to frequent there was an old, infirm-looking man that used to stand alone in the corner quietly doing his own thing - not bothering anyone but not speaking to anyone either.
He was a bit of a loner really. Little did I know that this old man (Tom, as I now know him) was a genius! It all happened after Tom stopped betting in our local bookies. We all commented that he hadn't been in recently and it was even suggested that he might have died! However, while out shopping one day with the Wife and kids I bumped into Tom doing his bit of shopping for the week. I hadn't spoken to him before but thought I would say hello to be polite. Once he started chatting I couldn't stop him! It was almost as if he hadn't really `spoken' to anyone in years! I asked him why he hadn't been in the bookies for a while and he told me that he had been banned from all the bookies in the area. This surprised me - he certainly didn't look the sort to cause anyone any trouble. So I worked out what I had staked and what I had at the end of the day and he was right, I was in profit by exactly £100 to the penny.
"How did you manage that, Tom?" I asked. It was an amazing moment for me - I'd seen magic shows in the past but nothing amazed me more than what Tom had just done!
